Supporting local communities of the Solukhumbu Valley.

Koru Mountain’s main purpose is to support the local sherpa communities of the Solukhumbu Valley.

All money raised from our treks goes directly to the local families of the area. Koru Mountains provides valuable employment for local guides, porters and trekking support staff. All staff employed by Koru Mountains are direct family members of our founder, Phurenje Sherpa. This also includes staying in family-owned tea houses run by Phurenje’s relatives along the trail.

We also sponsor young sherpa guides to obtain guiding and climbing qualifications, so they can further their own careers in the tourism industry.

Koru Mountains has a personal connection with the schools and hospitals in the valley. Our itineraries are designed to include visits to schools, and we work with clients to bring supplies such as sporting equipment, books and stationery to the children and teachers.

After the devasting earthquake in 2015, Koru Mountains and the local Twizel community fundraised to repair the monastery in Khari Khola (Phurenje Sherpa’s family village).

Sir Edmund and Louise Hillary founded the Himalayan Trust in the 1960s. Ever since then, the organisation has inspired New Zealanders to give their time, money and support to help the people of Nepal.

The Himalayan Trust raises funds to bring education, safe water, and better healthcare to communities in the Everest region of Nepal.

Koru Mountains supports the New Zealand Himalayan Trust and the work they do in the Solukhumbu Valley. Our founder, Phurenje Sherpa, is a current and active member of the Himalayan Trust and ambassador for the organisation.

It seems like yesterday we were making our way through the Khumbu enjoying the superior local knowledge and expert tour guiding offered by the Koru Mountains team. It was a trip of a lifetime and has been an unforgettable experience.

Everest – iconic, beautiful, remote, foreboding – was a constant presence; but more than this Phurenje and his team were able to share their culture and the Nepalese way of life…whilst doing everything possible to help make the adventure work perfectly for every walker.

In 2018 our family had the pleasure of trekking in the Solokhumbu/Everest area with Koru Mountains for just over two weeks….Every part of our trip was awesome, including planning, communication, support and guiding in Kathmandu, and guiding on our trek.

…the greatest pleasure came not so much from the landscapes (which were stunning), as from meeting the people and seeing their lifestyle. Koru Mountains have everything covered. All you have to do is turn up and enjoy the experience.
